Sumayah Sugapong ’23 for making history with the UC San Diego Tritons by leading them to their first-ever Big West Women’s Basketball Championship. Sumayah’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned her the prestigious
Big West Tournament MVP title, solidifying her reputation as a dynamic leader and playmaker on the court.
The championship run was filled with unforgettable moments, but none more dramatic than the Big West Tournament semifinal against Hawai’i on March 14. Sumayah delivered a thrilling buzzer-beater, securing a 51-49 victory for the Tritons. She led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 8-of-19 from the field, and contributed significantly with her defensive efforts.

In the championship game on March 15, UCSD defeated UC Davis 75-66, punching their ticket to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in program history. Sumayah played a crucial role in the victory, contributing 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, showcasing her ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
As a sophomore guard, Sumayah has been a force for the Tritons all season, averaging 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. Her defensive tenacity and ability to create opportunities for her teammates have made her one of the standout players in the Big West Conference.

Her journey from the LJCDS basketball courts to college basketball stardom is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and passion for the game. During her time at Country Day, Sumayah was known not only for her skill but also for her leadership, work ethic, and commitment to excellence—qualities that continue to define her success at the collegiate level.
Sumayah is not the only Torrey making waves in March Madness. She is joined by Naomi Panganiban ’24 of San Diego State University and Te-hina Paopao ’20 of NC State. Both have also helped their teams earn spots in the NCAA Tournament. The LJCDS community is thrilled to see three former Torreys competing on the biggest stage in college basketball, representing the values, determination, and excellence instilled in them during their time at Country Day.
