On Thursday, May 26, fifth-grade students participated in a model United Nations summit as part of the culmination of their world geography and history studies. The dynamic class—led by Mr. Steve Traverso—not only focuses on where these countries are located but also the history and current global issues that the cultures face.
“Model United Nations is the ultimate inquiry-based project," says Mr. Traverso. “Students were presented with real global issues and worked collaboratively to generate resolutions to those problems. My favorite aspect of this project is the organic nature in that the conference was completely student lead.”
After an opening session led by our own Secretary General, Mrs. Susie Nordenger, students broke out into various sessions to discuss key issues facing our global community, challenging them to explore the issue on a deeper level. The conference ended with a closing session and a resolution reached.
Gabi Herman ’23 shares, “I loved Model UN because it challenged us, and I never realized how hard it was to get a group of people to agree on one resolution. When you finally come to that resolution, it was very rewarding even if your resolution was not passed.”
