How one lifer’s dedication to helping others is leaving a mark and shaping her journey as a future doctor.
Ria Loomba ’25 believes in the power of connection. From sharing the vibrant traditions of Diwali with her classmates to bridging language barriers in a medical clinic, her 14-year journey at La Jolla Country Day School has been defined by a deep commitment to service and community impact. Her experiences—both within and beyond the LJCDS campus—have not only enriched others’ lives but also shaped her own, revealing a resilient spirit and a boundless determination to create positive change.
Ria’s passion for cultural exchange was sparked by an innocent question from a kindergarten classmate: “Are you Jewish or Christian?” Simply explaining Hinduism wasn’t enough. With her mother’s help, Ria brought her culture to life through a classroom Diwali celebration featuring traditional food, outfits, and stories. The tradition continued through Lower School and expanded in third grade when Ria showcased Kathak, a classical Indian dance.
Years later, as an Upper School student, she was invited to share her dance talent with the junior kindergarten’s global studies unit on India—a full-circle moment. “I vividly remember sitting in a circle on the carpet for show and tell or when guests visited,” she reflects. “And here I was, the guest, dancing and explaining Kathak to kids the same age I was when I started dancing. It was surreal.”
“The junior kindergartners are mesmerized by Ria,” shares Director of the Early Childhood Center Maria Curtis. “It’s more than just explaining her culture—she has built a personal connection with them through dance and music. When they see her on campus, it’s like she’s a rock star. They get so excited and feel special knowing that one of the ‘big kids’ spends time with them.
“I asked Ria to share her talents and knowledge because I wanted to give her an opportunity to shine but also to inspire our youngest students. She exemplifies a lifelong learner and someone who gives back. Knowing she once sat where they are now encourages them to imagine their future—to see themselves reading to younger students, teaching their passion, or even leading a schoolwide event that brings the community together.”
As a member of the Student Council and Indian Student Association in Upper School, Ria has helped elevate Diwali celebrations on campus. This year, she and her peers plan to introduce Holi, the festival of colors.
Beyond LJCDS, Ria’s dedication to service led her to a clinic in Chula Vista, where she volunteers as a Spanish translator. Leveraging language skills cultivated since kindergarten, she bridges crucial communication gaps for Spanish-speaking patients—who make up 70-80% of the clinic’s clientele. While her Spanish education at LJCDS provided a solid conversational base, Ria admits that the medical terminology required additional effort. “That part took extra effort,” she says, “but nothing a Google search couldn’t solve.”
One patient, in particular, left a lasting impression. “She came in with severe inflammation in her hands and joints, clearly in pain. Her granddaughter was with her, and I helped ensure her chart was accurate and translated her after-visit summary.” When the patient returned six weeks later, the improvement was evident. “Her hands were much better—she had even braided her granddaughter’s hair,” Ria shares, her voice filled with emotion. “That small detail showed me I had actually made a difference.”
Ria attributes much of her growth to the foundation built at LJCDS. “Being here since junior kindergarten has provided a consistent, nurturing environment that allowed me to discover my passions,” she explains. “It’s given me the stability and support to explore my interests and find ways to give back.”
That support inspired her to seek out local research labs, leading to two internships: hands-on bench research at The Schultz Lab and data analysis at UCSD’s MASLD Research Center. Bringing her experience back to campus, Ria shared her newfound skills with peers during Student Lab Technician flex time. She also gained a deeper understanding of her own aspirations. Already committed to a pre-med path, this exposure confirmed Ria’s joy working directly with patients, as she does at the clinic rather than in a lab.
When a classmate reached out after seeing her name on a published research paper, Ria shared her “secret” to finding internships, “Cold emailing is key,” she emphasizes. “You never know who might be looking for an intern.” She also stresses the importance of networking and utilizing platforms like
LinkedIn to connect with professionals.
Beyond academics, Ria values meaningful connections with people of all ages and backgrounds, a skill she honed at LJCDS. “In the lab, I’ve worked with everyone from college students to seasoned researchers and professors,” she explains. “The communication and interpersonal skills I’ve gained at LJCDS have helped me adapt and build strong working relationships.”
She also credits the unwavering support of the LJCDS faculty. “Having teachers who genuinely care about you makes a huge difference,” Ria says. “When I got my chemistry internship, the first thing I wanted to do was tell Mr. Lineback. Because of him and what I learned in his class, I became the youngest intern in a lab known for its chemistry research. That support system is unparalleled.”
“What stands out most about Ria is her unwavering determination and kindness,” shares Upper School Science Educator Todd Lineback, who taught her in two chemistry classes and oversees the Lab Tech flex time. “She uplifts those around her with her positive attitude and genuine desire to help others in meaningful ways.
“This year, Ria has taken on a crucial role in the lab tech program, setting up experiments, refining lab procedures, and maintaining an organized workspace. Through her efforts, she is giving back to the very same chemistry lab that deepened her love of science, helping future students gain the same hands-on experiences that inspired her.”
As Ria looks ahead to college and beyond, she carries with her the lessons, values, and experiences that have defined her journey. Her commitment to service, strong academic foundation, and deep connections position her to make a meaningful impact. Wherever her path leads, Ria’s passion for learning and dedication to others will undoubtedly continue to shine.
