“When I think about my faculty and students, I think about them as master craftsmen, continually shaping and polishing their curiosity, dignity and character. As an educator and leader, my role is to help them evolve into individuals who inspire greatness for a better world. I have great responsibility to lead a team of students and teachers who are empowered to be the best versions of themselves.”

Colleen A. O’Boyle believes it is not enough to prepare students for high school and college, rather she has a deep responsibility to prepare students for a life of leadership and innovation. This process begins early when we position young minds to become active in their own decision-making with the help and guidance of trusted adults.

Ms. O’Boyle began her academic career at the University of Maryland, in College Park, where she was a scholar-athlete. She majored in American literature and was a dual Division I athlete in swimming, cross country, and track and field. She continued her education at Middlebury College; Oxford University; and St. John’s College in Santa Fe, earning her master’s in English literature. Additionally, she holds a teaching credential in English from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Formally a faculty member of High Tech High in San Diego and a founding member and principal of the Da Vinci School in Los Angeles, Ms. O’Boyle has taught English, history and literature, along with leading the learning labs and design components of Da Vinci Design.

Ms. O’Boyle grew up with a balance between the arts and sciences. Her mother, a crafter and oil painter, placed a great emphasis on music and the arts, while her father, a former leader in the telecommunication industry, ensured his children were exposed to cutting-edge science, innovation and technology. Ms. O’Boyle’s husband, Isaac, a scientist and fellow leader in education, has a great passion for schools of the future and how we can position students to make a difference in this world.

In March 2016, Ms. O’Boyle and husband Isaac welcomed a baby boy Simon into the world. To learn more about Ms. O’Boyle’s education philosophy, click here.

“I inspire greatness by building students’ confidence and fostering a safe environment where students are encouraged to think critically, make mistakes, ask questions, and openly share thoughts and ideas. I would like students to discover their strengths and what they are passionate about in addition to improving communication skills that will help them succeed both in and out of the classroom.”

Alyssa Oezer believes that every student should be provided the opportunity to succeed in all areas of life with the support of a nurturing environment. She believes that a strong relationship between teacher and student cultivates confidence that fosters learning. As a speech-language pathologist, Miss Oezer works with students toward their individual speech and language goals. She enjoys her students’ excitement and eagerness to learn and is inspired by their hard work and dedication while working toward their goals.

Miss Oezer is a Michigan native who moved to California in 2020. She earned her bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology and audiology from Calvin College in 2019 and her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Calvin University in 2020.

Miss Oezer has worked with various ages from birth to young adulthood in the private practice setting. She joined the LJCDS Learning Resource Center in the spring of 2022 and enjoys working alongside the incredible staff members. Miss Oezer values collaboration with families and teachers to foster the carryover of learned skills to every aspect of a student’s life.

Miss Oezer enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, rollerblading and going to the beach. She also enjoys cooking and is always looking for a new recipe to try.

    Bio

“I inspire greatness for a better world by fostering a child’s curiosity of the world around them. I encourage them to be thinkers and to ask questions.”

Kristin Owen loves being a teacher and working at La Jolla Country Day School. She finds it fulfilling as it provides her an opportunity to put her knowledge into practice. Since 1999, Ms. Owen has explored summer camps, after-school care, third grade, Tiny Torreys and, currently, junior kindergarten. She enjoys seeing young children who were in her care grow into young adults as they progress through LJCDS. Her goal is to help lay the foundation for a love of learning and the early skills needed for these individuals to be successful on their journey through life.

Ms. Owen knew at an early point in her life that she wanted to be a teacher and work with children. In junior high and high school, she actively sought opportunities to learn about working with children by volunteering with summer and after-school programs. She studied sociology at UC San Diego, where she received her bachelor’s with a minor in teacher education. She honed her craft in the credential program at San Diego State University, where she earned a multiple-subject teaching credential. She has an interest in using art, music and movement to help develop both social and academic skills in young children.

When she is not teaching, Ms. Owen enjoys spending time with her husband and two children: Milo ’28 and Keiahni ’31. She loves watching soccer, traveling, going to the beach and nurturing her Pinterest addiction.
