Visit From Children's Author and a Macaw

By Coordinator of Library Services and Research Lorrie Culver
On Tuesday, October 25, second and third graders were treated to a presentation by the library’s guest author, Mina Javaherbin, and a surprise appearance by Red, a beautiful (and well-behaved) green-winged macaw.

Red, a resident of Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Del Mar, enhanced the reading of Ms. Javaherbin’s picture book. The Secret Message is a lovely retelling of Rumi’s 13th century Persian poem about a wealthy merchant and his caged bird who yearns to be set free. After the assembly, Ms. Javaherbin stayed to sign copies of her book and to take photos with the students and Red.

Ms. Javaherbin is an Iranian-born author and American-educated architect who, inspired by her love of Persian literature, began her writing career in 2010. Her other books include
The Elephant in the Dark, also based on a Rumi poem, and her sports books, Goal! and Soccer Star which were written due to her family’s love of the game.

Grant Writer Linda Ball and Community Engagement Manager Clare Pister at KPBS brought Ms. Javaherbin to our school as part of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of One Book One San Diego.
The Secret Message was the chosen One Book One San Diego children’s book in 2012. Ms. Ball was also responsible for bringing our special guest, Red, and his handler, Lauren Cooper, to the school. A big thank you to all for this special assembly!

Mina Javaherbin loves to hear from student readers of her books. She is available for questions and comments at her website.

Free Flight is an exotic bird sanctuary that is open to the public.
