The Next Generation of Inventors

By Eliza Jason, marketing and communications intern, Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager, and Rachel Baxter, digital media and design coordinator
Design & Innovation students traveled to Chicago to present their inventions at the international housewares expo.
Students designed original products in the Innovation Lab’s Design Thinking to Open Entrepreneurship course and presented them at their own booth in the inventors corner of The International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago. More than 60,000 people attended the show of about 2,200 exhibitors.

Sydney Strawn ’20, Leah Weiser ’20 and Sofia Besharati ’20 invented Collapsicatch, an elegantly simple collapsible silicone splatter and boil-over shield with a spoon rest.

Saskia Goldmann ’21 and Grace Oualline ’21 invented Steam Shield, a pot cover with an overflow reservoir, a place for steaming veggies and a lid that can be opened for stirring without having to fully remove the pot cover.

Jeramiah Woods ’21 and Ruslana Fogler ’21 invented Blend, a way to soften the harshness of IP dome cameras.

Aidan Ideker ’22 and Henry Timmermann ’22 invented BrewStop, a magnetic bottle cap and strainer that allows the user to stop tea or coffee brewing in a to-go bottle simply by turning the bottle upside down.

Dan Lenzen, assistant director of design and innovation, and Matthew Abbondanzio, assistant head of school for design and innovation, taught the course and accompanied the students to the show.

Chicago’s local news network WGN-TV covered the show and interviewed LJCDS students. Watch the full story here.
